SQ Sports paid the highest amount of money, $1.20 million, to proclaim the rights of Chittagong in the franchise bidding programme of the BPL T20 at The Dhaka Westin on Tuesday.
A minute’s silence was observed prior to the starting of the event to pay homage to Manzur Ahmed, the CEO of BCB who had passed away in the morning.
SQ Sports’ bid was not only the highest for Chittagong but also the highest of the day as nine bidders took part in the bidding for the six participating franchises.
The other five successful bidders were Alif Group who won the bid for Barisal with a bid of $1.01 million, Europa Group who bought the rights of Dhaka for $1.05 million, Orion Group who won the rights of Khulna for $1.10 million, Digital Auto Care who claimed the rights of Rajshahi for $1.07 million and Walton who bought the rights of Sylhet for $1.06 million.
The minimum floor price of the bidding process was $1 million and one company named Southern International’s bid to proclaim the rights of Barisal was declared null and void as they desired to pay $0.9 million, consequentially leaving Alif Group as the lone competitor.
Digital Auto Care and Pearl Trading bid $1.05 millions and $1 million for Chittagong respectively, but SQ Sports were far ahead in the process.
The rivalry for claiming the rights of Dhaka were not as towering as expected as Digital Auto Care and Euro Impex both dropped bids of exactly $1 million leaving Europa Group as the leaders.
Digital Auto Care left Euro Impex and Pearl Trade behind to win the rights of Rajshahi as Euro Impex bid $1.05 million and Pearl Trade was willing to pay $1.02 million.
Southern International and Pearl Trading’s respective bids of $1.03 million and $1.02 million were not enough as Orion bid $1.10 million for the rights of Khulna.
Shihab Trade and Southern International bid for Sylhet $1.03 million and $1.02 million respectively but Walton was the highest bidder.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, chairman of the BPL T20 Governing Council, hoped to promote Bangladesh with the event.
“With the BPL T20 Bangladesh will have a new identity in the world. This is a new era of Bangladesh cricket,” said Lipu.
Ali Ahsan Mahmood, director of SQ Sports, vowed to form a strong team. “We are looking forward to forming a strong team and hope to finish as the top team,” said Mahmood.
Tanvir Qamrul Islam, director of Orion Group, said Dhaka will be the trendsetter. “We will be inserting the best possible players and add new ideas to win the matches and also provide a high level of entertainment,” said Tanvir.
Mushfiqur Rahman Mohan, the managing director of Digital Auto Care, hoped that Rajshahi will be the top team. He also introduced former national skipper Faruque Ahmed and former national opener and renowned commentator Ather Ali Khan as the advisors to Rajshahi.
BCB Directors Shafiqur Rahman Munna and Serajuuddin Md Alamgir were also present on the occasion.
