The title sponsor of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament was announced at a local hotel in the city on Saturday.
Destiny Group was the highest bidding company to achieve the rights of the title sponsor from the Indian event management company Game On Sports Management with an amount of Tk. 7.50 crore for season 1 ’2012′. In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Game On Sports Management and Destiny Group on Saturday.
The tournament will now be known as Destiny-Boishakhi BPL 2012. In this case, Baisakhi Television, a concern of Destiny Group now own the local broadcasting rights from yet-to-be-launched Channel 9, the original holder of the broadcasting rights. Channel 9 also singed a deal with ESPNStar for international broadcasting of the BPL matches.
Anjan Ganguly, director of the Game on Sports Management Company and Rofiqul Amin, chairman of the Destiny Group, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

The chairman of the Destiny Group handed over the cheque of Tk. 7.50 crore during the signing agreement ceremony.
Rofiqul Amin said after signing agreement that, “We feel proud of becoming a part of the forthcoming biggest domestic flagship event in the country-BPL. At the same time we are grateful to saturate ourselves for the first time with the cricket which is earned name and fame for the country from international arena.”

“We have just started our journey and made a contract with the official sponsorship company with handsome money only for the first year.”
“It is not a scanty amount for the title sponsor of the tournament. Even it would not be right to compare with the title sponsorship and the ticket selling and distribution sponsorship of the meet,” Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir, member secretary of BPL governing body and director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board replied to a query.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is eyeing a good turnover by hosting the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 tournament. A Franchise Education Programme conducted by Arun Lal, the former Indian Test Cricketer, commentator and chief consultant of Game on Sports Management, the event management firm of the meet took place at the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel on Thursday, 22 Feb 2011. Amrit Mathur, the CEO of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Dare Devils was also present on the occasion.
The speakers explained the franchises and the branding of the meet and their aspirations to rock the country with the slam-bang format of cricket.
The six year deal is worth US $ 44.33 million and the event management committee will give two years’ money in advance to the Bangladesh Cricket Board. BCB officials said the money is ensured and making the event a successful one is the sole responsibility of the event management firm.
Arun Lal revealed big names like Shane Warne, Mathew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Keiron Pollard, Muttiah Muralitharan, Daren Bravo will be included in the auction of the 75 foreign players, scheduled to be held at Dhaka on January 5, 2012.
Though the Pakistan players have been refused permission to play in the lucrative Bangladesh Premier Twenty20 League (BPL) by their cricket board (PCB) in order to concentrate on next month’s Test series against England in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Nine Pakistani players have been offered contracts by different clubs in the BPL that begins on Dec 26 but the PCB has stopped Test players, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Imran Farhat, Mohammad Hafeez and Abdul Rehman from signing.
“The PCB feels that at this time when the national team is due to play a very important Test series against England it would not be appropriate to allow our top players to play in any foreign T20 league,” PCB media manager Nadeem Sarwar told Reuters.
“No player at this stage has been given permission to sign any contract.”
Other players offered contracts include out of favour Test players, Kamran Akmal and Wahab Riaz and Umar Akmal and Sohail Tanvir who recently played in the one-day series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Mean time, Alam group and Ispahani group has shown interest to buy the franchisee of Chittagong team while Beximco is eager to buy the franchisee of Dhaka.
As of more development on BPL 2012 T20 cricket, Virgo Media Channel 9 Bangladesh was named as the official broadcaster. Along with Channel 9, there is a very good possibility that either ESPN or TEN Sports will share the broadcast.

6 logo together

Chittagong Kings’ logo unveiled

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) team Chittagong Kings unveiled their team logo and introduced the team management to the press through a ceremony held in Dhaka on Friday.
The port-city franchise CEO Samir Qader Chowdhury, head-coach Khaled Mahmud and team manager Nasir Ahmed were present on the unveiling occasion.
Samir on the occasion said, “I hope the Chittagonians will hold the Chittagong Kings logo close to their hearts and support us throughout the tournament.’
He hoped Chittagong Kings would play a positive role in the development of the country’s second largest city and the region.
After unveiling the logo a showcase of an audio visual was presented.
Model and new presenter Farhana Nisho conducted the programme, attended by host of dignitaries.
It was announced in the press conference that national-vice captain Mahmudullah will lead Chittagong Kings in the inaugural edition of the BPL. It was further announced that former Australian batsmen Dean Jones and Michael Bevan will join Chittagong Kings soon as technical director and batting coach respectively.
However, Chittagong’s icon player Tamim Iqbal and skipper Mahmudullah was absent from the logo unveiling ceremony.
“Mahmudullah had his Dhaka Premier League matches today and Tamim has his match tomorrow,” said King’s CEO as the reason for their absence.

Afridi top prize in BPL auction

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was the hottest property in an auction held for the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament on Thursday, but English spinner Monty Panesar and former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs failed to attract bids.

Afridi was sold to the Dhaka franchise for $700,000 after some intense bidding involving five of the six franchises for the Feb. 10-28 tournament, which is based on the successful Indian Premier League model.
The all-rounder, however, will only be available for the final two days of the opening BPL campaign as he is on national team duty against England in the United Arab Emirates.
Tournament organisers said the money would be given to the players proportionately for the matches they are available.
Quick-scoring West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who is available from Feb. 14, was another to attract attention with Barisal paying $551,000 for him.
His compatriots Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard also created a stir as they were sold for $360,000 and $300,000 to Rajshahi and Dhaka franchises respectively.
A total of 111 overseas players and 80 local cricketers were put on auction with teams given a maximum budget of $2million and able to buy no more than eight overseas players.
Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik (Chittagong $150,000) West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo (Chittagong $150,000), Australia’s Brad Hodge (Barisal $140,000), Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (Rajshahi $110,000) and Muttiah Muralitharan (Chittagong $100,000) were among others to go for big money.
No Indian players were included in the auction.
Along with Panesar and Gibbs, New Zealand’s Scott Styris and Lou Vincent failed to attract a buyer.
Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O’Brien was the most expensive player from the associate nations with Khulna paying $80,000 for the batsman.
Bangladesh internationals Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Ashraful, Shahriar Nafees and Alok Kapali had been selected as icon players for six franchises and were excluded from auction.
All-rounder Nasir Hossain was the most-sought-after Bangladeshi in the auction with Khulna sealing his signature for $200,000.
India-based Game On Sports Management will run the tournament after winning the bid from the Bangladesh Cricket Board for six years for $44.33

BPL T20: Power Cricket to brand Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Premier League’s (BPL) main focus is to brand Bangladesh as an attractive cricketing nation, officials said at a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
The tournament will consist of six divisional teams which will participate on a franchise basis. The divisional teams will be franchised through an open auction which will take place at the Westin Dhaka on January 10. The minimum bidding amount of a franchise will be 1 million US dollars.
Each team will consist of 18 players out of with a maximum of nine foreign players, up to five of whom can play in a match. There will be six star players from Bangladesh representing each team as an Icon player.
During the auction, there will be three categories for foreign players with bidding for category A starting from 1,00,000 US dollars, for category B 50,000 US dollars and for category C 25,000 US dollars. The categorisation of Bangladeshi players and the final Bangladeshi player auction list will be decided on January 7 in the BPL Governing Council meeting.
The players’ auction is set to be held at either the Radisson Water Garden or the Pan Pacific Shonargaon on January 19 from 11am onwards and the program will be telecast live worldwide through the Broadcasting Partner of the BPL, Channel-9. Overseas broadcasting partners have yet to be announced.
Recently, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Farveez Mahroof (Sri Lanka), Sohail Tanvir (Pakistan), and retired Proteas pacer Andre Nel have joined the growing list of foreign players to have announced themselves available for the tournament.
An opening ceremony is being planned for the first ever edition of the BPL T20 on February 9 at the Sher-e-Banagla National Stadium in Mirpur. A concert will be held at Cox’s Bazar on January 13 which will unveil the theme song of the tournament in which local and foreign artists will also perform. While the artist of the song has been kept a secret the song has been said to be composed by Bappi Lahiri.
Tickets will be sold 10 days prior to the start of the tournament through bank outlets.
Yet to be launched, Channel 9 has the exclusive rights to broadcasting the matches of the BPL T20 for its first 6 editions at the cost of 24 Million US dollars.
